Journeyman Electrician License in Arizona

Written by a licensed IBEW journeyman electrician

Last updated: October 24, 2026

We found no state journeyman electrician license in Arizona. The Registrar of Contractors licenses electrical contractors, and we found no journeyman license. The City of Phoenix says it does not issue an electrical license for a journeyman or apprentice. Some other cities may have their own requirements, so check with the city where you'll work.

The facts, from the source

Who licenses: Arizona Registrar of Contractors (contractor licensing only). It licenses electrical contractors through a qualifying party (A.R.S. 32-1122). (azleg.gov)
Exam: We found no journeyman exam at the state level. The Registrar's qualifying-party exam (Statutes & Rules plus trade) applies to contractor licenses only. (azleg.gov)
Experience required (contractor license): We found no state journeyman requirement. A contractor qualifying party needs 4 years of practical or management trade experience, at least 2 of them within the last 10 years (A.R.S. 32-1122(E)). Technical training may count up to 2 years toward the contractor requirement. (azleg.gov)

Other cities and counties: check with the city where you'll work. We reviewed Phoenix only.
A 2026 bill, SB 1670, would let local governments issue electrical journeyman licenses. It was still pending in the House as of March 25, 2026. We do not know its final status.
