Journeyman Electrician License in South Carolina
Written by a licensed IBEW journeyman electrician
Last updated:
We found no state journeyman electrician license in South Carolina. The state licenses electrical work at the contractor level: commercial work through the Contractor's Licensing Board and residential work through the Residential Builders Commission. A voluntary Carolinas AGC journeyman certification exists, but CAGC says it is not a license.
The facts, from the source
- Who licenses
- South Carolina LLR Contractor's Licensing Board (a mechanical contractor license with an Electrical classification, for commercial work over $10,000) and the Residential Builders Commission (a residential electrician license, for work over $500). Both are contractor level. (llr.sc.gov)
- Residential electrician license
- The Residential Builders Commission issues a residential electrician license for work over $500. (llr.sc.gov)
- Voluntary CAGC certification (not a license)
- The Carolinas AGC SC Trades Certification offers journeyman electrician exams (Journeyman Electrician and Journeyman Electrician - Residential, plus Master Electrician and Master Residential Electrician), administered by Prov. CAGC itself says it is not a license. The application fee is $35 (also required to retest). Exams are computer-based, online or in person at an approved facility. (cagc.org)
Confirm these with the board
- City and county requirements: we did not survey local ordinances. Some cities may have their own requirements, so check with the city where you'll work.
- Details of the voluntary CAGC exam (format, passing score, experience): not published in the materials we checked
- NEC edition: not confirmed
